About DBeck Creative
We are an interactive design and development consultancy based in El Cerrito, California (just across the bay from San Francisco). The company was founded by Dave Beck, who has over 15 years of digital design experience. He has worked in the multimedia departments of the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press, and the Exploratorium. As a consultant, Dave has worked with dozens of clients from the local (friends and neighbors) to the global (Microsoft, Merrill Lynch and others).
We specialize in designing and building community-driven websites and mobile apps for small- to mid-size clients. Our favorite technologies include Drupal and WordPress (for content management) and Flash and Cocoa (for rich interactives). We are geeks with design chops; we see beauty in color, shape, and XML feeds.
We believe that form should follow function, and we strive to create economical designs with visually rich elements where appropriate. We like Bauhaus, Koolhaas, and Hannes von Döhren. We think Tufte has a point, but is a little full of himself. We love the open-source movement but miss coding from the ground up. We wish it were possible to build a website in tempered glass.
On the award front, we are pleased to announce that "Never Lost: Polynesian Navigation" (which Dave designed and developed while at the Exploratorium and completed as a consultant) was recently named a Webby Official Honoree. The site explores the science of non-instrument, open-ocean navigation as it was developed by Pacific islanders, and how it relates to Hawaiian culture. We are very proud of this Flash-based site, and hope you'll spend some time there.
